Fluids and Their Effect on Measurements of Lunar Soil Particle Size
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: From the late 1960s until now, lunar soil particle size distributions have typically been determined by sieving—sometimes dry, and at other times with fluids such as water or Freon [1-15]. Laser diffraction instruments allow rapid assessment of particle size distribution, and eventually may replace sieve measurements. However, when measuring lunar soils with laser diffraction instruments, care must be taken in choosing a carrier fluid that is compatible with lunar material. Background: Distilled water is the fluid of choice for laser diffraction measurements of substances when there is no concern about adverse effects of water on the material being measured. When we began our analyses of lunar soils using laser diffraction, our first measurements were made with distilled water [14, 15]. Although the medians that we measured were comparable to earlier sieve data, the means tended to be significantly larger than expected.

The study of particle size distribution of calcium carbonate and its effects on some soil properties in khuzestan province
ABSTRACT-This experiment was carried out to study particle size distribution (PSD) of carbonates in soils and its effect on some calcareous soil properties in Khuzestan Province, Iran. Soil samples (n=72) were collected from different regions. To evaluate the effect of carbonates on water contents at pressure head of -1500kpa and PSD of soil samples, these properties were determined before and ...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Gypsum, sulfuric acid, and sulfur are used to improve saline and sodic soils. In some cases, animal manures are also used, which varies according to environmental conditions and soil type (Jesus et al., 2019). Industrial gypsum is often used to modify saline and sodic soils due to electrolyte maintenance, physical and hydraulic properties (Keren, 1996), low c...
متن کاملNew Model for Agglutinitic Glass Formation from Lscc Data
Introduction: Since the return of the first lunar samples it has been well known that glass-welded aggregates (agglutinates) accumulate in lunar soil as the result of multiple processes, many of which are driven by micrometeorite impacts. The proportion of agglutinates increases with increasing exposure to the space environment, and for an individual soil the proportion of agglutinates also inc...
متن کاملShape and Size Relationship of Several Lunar Dusts: Preliminary Results
Introduction: Before establishing a human outpost on the Moon, numerous problems associated with lunar dust must be addressed and mitigated [1, 2]. The deleterious nature of lunar dusts was experienced during all Apollo missions. Lunar dusts (brought in on dirty spacesuits and boots) contaminated the atmosphere in the lunar module and irritated the eyes, sinuses, and throats of the astronauts [...
